Travel Midwest Site Map

Maps

The real-time maps on the Travel Midwest site are created from data provided by a variety of sources including the Illinois DOT, the Illinois Tollway, the Chicago Skyway, the Wisconsin DOT, the Indiana DOT, the Indiana Toll Road, the Michigan DOT, and the Minnesota DOT. The maps can be scrolled and zoomed to allow you to view the area in which you are interested. Information on the maps is displayed in layers. There are layers for travel times, congestion, construction, incidents, road labels and shields, dynamic message signs, cameras, and special events. Layers may be displayed or hidden using the toggle buttons in the Layer and Zoom Control panel on the map page to allow you to focus on the information you find useful, and to remove information you do not find relevant. See the Map Help page for more information on using the maps.

The Travel Midwest home page displays a map that stores the area displayed and the layers visible in a cookie on your browser. When you return to the Travel Midwest home page or select "My Map" from the "Maps" menu, the map will display that area.

The "maps" menu includes menu items that initially display an interactive map of a predefined area. These maps can be scrolled, zoomed, etc. but the map configuration is not saved when you close your browser. There are maps for:

Notices

The Gateway Traveler Information System receives announcements about construction, news items and other information of interest to travelers from various agencies. The Travel Midwest site displays these announcements according to the following categories (an announcement can be in more than one category):

Announcements related to truckers are listed on the Truckers Report.

Reports

The real-time reports are created from data provided by a variety of sources including the Illinois DOT, the Illinois Tollway, the Chicago Skyway, the Wisconsin DOT, the Indiana DOT, the Indiana Toll Road, the Michigan DOT, and the Minnesota DOT.

Select the type of travel report you wish to view from the "Reports" menu or from this list:

Then you can view information for a particular location by selecting the location from the form at the top of the report page. The locations are either a given expressway (for expressway reports) or a given county (for arterial reports). If you click the name of a state, the report will include information for all the locations in that state. For more information, see the Reports Help page. You may customize your travel information by going to the My Travel page and selecting your "Favorite Locations". Then whenever you go to one of the reports pages, the information for your selected favorite locations will initially appear.

To serve the needs of the trucking community, the Travel Midwest site aggregates the major incident, construction, and congestion conditions currently being experienced in the Lake Michigan region on the Truckers Report. This report also lists announcements and links of interest to truckers.

Trips

The Trip Map is used to define a trip along the expressways in the Travel Midwest coverage area. The Trip Report uses detector readings and other data to calculate current approximate travel times along a trip, and also shows incidents and construction on that trip. You can register with the Midwest Travel Trips Alerts System to receive customizable email alerts about conditions along trips you have defined. For more information about using the Trip Map, Trip Report, and Travel Midwest Alerts, see Trips and Alerts Help. The pages involved with trips and the Midwest Travel Trips Alerts System are:
